Gaiters are a useful piece of backpacking apparel for keeping snow, rain, sand and dirt out of boots and for insulating the ankles and lower legs. They are especially good for off-trail (cross-country) travel to keep debris out of boots.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Hiking Boots
  • Wicking Socks
  • Wool Or Fleece Socks
  • Supergaiters
  • Gaiters

Step1
Thumb through a couple of reputable outdoor magazines for articles and reviews on equipment purchases to find out the recommended models and manufacturers of gaiters.
Step2
Consider the climate you are likely to be backpacking in. In temperatures below 10 degrees F, you may want "supergaiters," which cover the boot and keep the foot warmer; in temperatures above 10 degrees F, regular gaiters will do.
Step3
Look for simplicity over features. Supergaiters are much warmer but can be difficult to get over the boot and tend to pop off.
Step4
Try the gaiters on while wearing your boots and gloves before you make your purchase. Good gaiters will be relatively easy to get on and off with gloved hands.
Step5
Buy a reputable brand from a reputable outdoor company, and make sure there is a return policy and warranty in case you have a problem.
