Internet telephony is an inexpensive way to carry on voice conversations in real time. In general, two people can only communicate via Internet telephony if they have the same or similar programs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  • Internet Telephony Programs
  • Instant Message Software
  1. Step 1

Establish a small group of friends and associates with whom you'd like to make phone calls over the Internet.

  2. Step 2

Investigate the prices and features of several programs by searching for "Internet telephony" on the Web or visiting a local software retailer.

  3. Step 3

Decide together on a telephony program that's compatible with all respective computer systems. Choose based on price, usability and any special features you may be interested in.

  4. Step 4

    Obtain and install the program.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your telephony goals are more broad-based (business-oriented), make sure the software you choose uses the H.323 protocol, which has been widely accepted as the industry standard.
  • For even more universality, consider signing up with an Internet Telephone Service Provider (ITSP). This will allow you to make phone calls online to people who don't have telephony software.
  • You might also consider instant messaging software, such as ICQ or AOL Instant Messenger, which are available on the Web for free. You don't get the voice effects, but you do get instant communication.
  • Internet telephony is a long way from replacing traditional telephone communication. Don't cancel your long-distance service just yet.
