    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Internet Access
    • Computers
    • America Online
      • 1

Check the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section of your instant message program for specific etiquette guidelines and regulations.

      • 2

Include a standard, friendly greeting, such as "Hello," in your initial instant message rather than just jumping into a conversation.

      • 3

Many instant message programs allow users to put up online "Do Not Disturb" indicators. If someone on your list has this indicator activated, leave him or her alone for the time being.

      • 4

Don't send an instant message to someone who is at work unless you're sure it's OK. Also, make sure you don't send personal or potentially inappropriate messages until you know the recipient is at his or her desk. Your recipient's co-workers might come by and see the message.

      • 5

Let the recipient know beforehand if you are going to write a lengthy response so that he or she doesn't feel ignored while you are working on it. Send the message all at once rather than one sentence at a time.

      • 6

Avoid leaving your instant message program on if you're not at your computer. Otherwise, others won't know when you're available.

      • 7

Forward messages wisely. Think twice before you send the latest virus warning, surcharge notification or joke to everyone on your list.

Answer instant messages, especially if important information is sent. At the minimum acknowledge that you received the message.

Maybe I'm the only one talking to only 1 person at a time, but it's so annoying when the other person is chatting with someone else, and it takes 2 minutes to get a response. It's like pulling teeth and I just want to call them. Shouldn't you only chat with one person? or at least tell everyone that you've got multiples going on?
