Step 1
Begin searching fashion magazines and local stores at least four months prior to the prom.
-
Step 2
Try on every dress that you see in stores to determine what is in style this year, and to gauge your size.
-
Step 3
Choose a basic style and color scheme that you like.
-
Step 4
Ask dress boutiques if they carry catalogs for dresses that are not in stock, but that can be ordered direct from the designer.

Step 5
Consider hiring a seamstress to create a one-of-a-kind gown for you. Purchase the fabric yourself, then work with the seamstress to develop the perfect design for your body type.

Look online. A growing number of Web sites feature virtual fitting rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of dresses and gowns, most of which can be shipped straight to your front door.

on 5/14/2007 Made to measure online shopping. Some online websites (like www.splendid-gowns.com) offer made to measure dresses. This is a good option to choose if you are not standard size.

on 6/30/2006 Online shopping is useful. I'm in the UK and there are many options to getting a prom dress online; but I would suggest allowing up to 2 weeks delivery and returns. I bought a dress and had to get the next size up and returned it, luckily I had received my new dress within 3 days.
