How to Understand the Results of an Amniocentesis
Your obstetrician will explain the results of the amniocentesis to you. But here are a few guidelines.
Instructions
-
-
1
Understand that normal amniotic fluid is clear. It may contain a few white flecks later on in the pregnancy. Blood in amniotic fluid usually belongs to the mother and is not generally something to worry about.
-
2
Understand that the presence of feces in the amniotic fluid in the third trimester may mean fetal distress.
-
-
3
Understand that chromosomes from the amniotic fluid will be analyzed for Down's syndrome and that levels of alpha-fetoprotein will be measured to check for spina bifida - amniocentesis is 100 percent effective in detecting them.
-
4
Understand that chromosomal analysis will reveal the sex of the baby and help pinpoint any sex-related diseases such as hemophilia.
-
5
Understand that other genes will be analyzed to detect substances that relate to developmental and metabolic disorders.
-
6
Be patient. The results from amniocentesis may take up to two weeks. Your obstetrician will want to meet with you in person to discuss the results.
-
7
Understand that amniocentesis will not always be able to determine if your baby will be healthy. A normal amniocentesis does not guarantee a normal baby.

Tips & Warnings
Consider Chorionic Villi Sampling if you are concerned about a possible genetic disorder or birth defect. Similar to amniocentesis, it can be performed earlier in the pregnancy, and results are available sooner.
