How to Get Wrinkles Out of Denim Material Without Ironing

Denim fabric has been in use since the 1500s, but it didn't become a common wardrobe fabric until the 1870s when Levi Strauss discovered the fabric, which hailed from France. Denim is a durable material that can withstand a lot of wear and tear, but it's not impervious to wrinkling. Whether your denim jeans have creases in them after washing or your denim shirt was scrunched in the closet, removing wrinkles from the fabric can be done without the painstaking task of ironing.

Step 1

Fill a clean spray bottle with water. Mist the wrinkled areas of the denim with water, and hold a blow dryer about 2 inches from the fabric and apply low heat until the wrinkles are gone. Smooth out wrinkles with your hands as you pass the blow dryer over the fabric.

Step 2

Mix one cup of warm water and 1 tsp. of fabric softener into a clean spray bottle. Spritz the mixture -- a homemade fabric relaxant -- onto the wrinkled denim, and smooth out the wrinkles with your hands.

Step 3

Place the wrinkled denim garment in the dryer with a damp washcloth. Dry the items for 20 minutes on medium heat to lift out the wrinkles.

Step 4

Put the garment on a hanger – use a clamp hanger for pants or skirts and a shirt hanger for shirts or jackets – and hang the item in the bathroom. Turn on the hot water in the shower and close the bathroom door. Leave the garment in the bathroom for at least 15 minutes to allow the steam to straighten out the wrinkles.

Step 5

Lay the denim garment flat on the floor, smoothing out the fabric as much as possible. Place a damp bath towel on top of the garment and press it down onto the wrinkled areas of the denim. Rub your hand over the damp towel to smooth out the wrinkles.

Step 6

Fill a kettle with water and bring it to a boil. Hold the wrinkled areas of the denim about 8 inches above the spout of the kettle so the steam hits the fabric. Smooth the fabric with your hands after applying the steam to help release the wrinkles. This method works best for lifting light wrinkles from denim.

Step 7

Heat a hair straightener to medium heat. Place the wrinkled parts of the denim in the hair straightener and clamp it down. Only leave the straightener on one part of the fabric for a few seconds so you don't burn the material.
