Skin can become thin from aging or medication. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, thin skin is missing the protective layer of fat under the skin, making it more fragile. It becomes bruised and torn more easily. Taking care of yourself can help the skin to repair, or at least prevent it from progressing.

Walkers and runners need tough skin on the bottom of their feet so they don't develop blisters. Tincture of Benzoin and rubbing alcohol applied daily will aid in the toughening of skin.

Make Thin Skin Tougher

Eat at least five fruits and vegetables each day to provide the skin with necessary antioxidants. The vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables help to keep the collagen in the skin healthy.

Apply a moisturizer containing Vitamins A, C and E to the skin often. This will help to keep it moisturized, and will eliminate drying and flaking. The moisturizers will also help to toughen it by helping to retain moisture.

Avoid spending time outdoors during the times when the sun can do the most damage, or wear a good sunscreen. These peak hours are between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. The sun causes damage to the skin and can age it prematurely.

Drink at least 5 8 oz. glasses of water every day. Dry skin can lead to thin skin. Keeping the skin hydrated will keep the skin from drying out and becoming thin.

Toughen Skin to Avoid Blisters

Soak a cotton ball in tincture of benzoin and rub the skin that needs to be toughened each morning. Allow it to dry before putting on footwear.

Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and apply to the skin each night.

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for two weeks to toughen your skin.

Warning

Quit smoking, if applicable. Smoking restricts blood vessels, which will reduce the flow of blood to your skin. This causes thin skin.
