How to Troubleshoot and Fix the Top Element in the Magic Chef

Magic Chef ovens have two heating elements, placed at the top and bottom of the oven cavity. The top element is known as the "broil element," and is used for broiling food, which provides a similar effect to grilling. If the broil element fails to heat, you must inspect it for damage, and if none is found, test the element for continuity to determine if the element or if the electronic oven control has failed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the range from the wall outlet, or turn off the range breaker in your service panel.

    • 2

Open the oven door and remove the oven racks.

    • 3

Remove the screw securing the oven sensor, if the oven sensor is secured to the base of the heating element in your model, then pull the oven sensor out of the way.

    • 4

Remove the mounting screws at the base of the heating element, then remove the mounting screws securing the heating element to the roof of the oven.

    • 5

Pull the element away from the rear wall of the oven, then disconnect the wires from the element terminals.

    • 6

Inspect the element for damage, such as breaks, cracks or blisters. If any are found, the element must be replaced.

    • 7

Set the multimeter to the lowest setting to measure Ohms of resistance, then calibrate the meter. For instructions specific to your meter, refer to the meter's owner's manual.

    • 8

Touch one of the multimeter probes to one of the terminals on the element. Touch the other probe to the other element terminal.

    • 9

Look at the multimeter display. If the display shows a resistance of infinite Ohms of resistance, the element is bad and must be replaced.

    • 10

Connect the wires to the terminals on the new element, if replacing the element, then secure the element into position using the screws that were removed.

    • 11

Replace the oven sensor, as well as the oven racks.

    • 12

Close the oven door, then restore power to the range.
