How to Make a Non-Slip Headband

Embellish the stretchy headband with a coordinating bow.

Make a wide ribbon headband that will stay in place all day long with a strong middle layer of interfacing and a small length of elastic at the bottom of the headband. Make the headband from a neutral colored ribbon for a hair accessory that will coordinate with any outfit, or make brightly colored headbands from patterned ribbon instead. You can change the width of the ribbon to make narrower or wider headbands, and then let your creative side take over and embellish the headband with decorations, such as ribbon bows, buttons and silk flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around your head and subtract 3 inches from the measurement. Cut two pieces of the 2-inch-wide ribbon, each to this length.

    • 2

Cut a piece of interfacing. Make the piece 1 3/4 inches wide by 1/2 inch shorter than your strips of ribbon. Trim the corners from both ends of the interfacing. Each end should look like half of a hexagon.

    • 3

Lay one piece of ribbon on your work surface with the good side down. Place the interfacing on the ribbon, and then place the second piece of ribbon on the interfacing with the good side facing outward. Sew a blanket stitch along the outer edges to join the layers together. Leave 1/2 inch down each side without stitches for now.

    • 4

Cut a 2-inch-long piece of the 1/2-inch-wide elastic. Fold the 2-inch-long piece of elastic in half and sandwich one end of the interfacing in between the ends of the elastic. Sew a zigzag stitch to attach the elastic fold to the interfacing.

    • 5

Place the fold of the elastic against the other end of the interfacing and sew a zigzag stitch to join the fold to the interfacing. Sew a blanket stitch down the open 1/2-inch of each side.
