How to Make Facial Hair More Visible

How to Make Facial Hair More Visible thumbnail
A two-toned beard is a natural look for some men.

A light blond or red beard will naturally not be as visible as a dark-haired beard. There are ways to darken your beard, however, such as using mascara in the same color as the beard. Mascara will enhance and slightly darken the hairs, with a similar result as when it's used on eyelashes. You can also use a beard corrector -- a pencil made for filling in natural gaps in a beard -- or hair dye that is specially formulated for beards. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Mascara

    • 1

Pull the wand out of the mascara tube and rub the wand against the inside of the tube two times to remove some of the mascara.

    • 2

Brush the mascara wand against the beard using short, light and even strokes. Apply the mascara in 2-by-2-inch patches of beard.

    • 3

Rub a paper towel against the beard in the areas you have applied the mascara. Work quickly before the mascara dries to smudge it into the beard. This will give you a more even, natural look.

    • 4

Remove the mascara at night before going to bed with liquid eye makeup remover. Soak a cotton ball with the remover, then rub it against the facial hair to remove the mascara. Alternatively, use cold cream or foundation makeup remover to remove the mascara.

    Beard Corrector Pencil

    • 5

Lightly draw short strokes in the facial hair gaps.

    • 6

Turn the pencil around and use the brush end to smudge the pencil marks, which makes it more natural looking.

    • 7

Remove the beard corrector pencil at night with eye makeup remover.

    Facial Hair Dye

    • 8

Put on the gloves that are provided in the facial hair dye package. Read the package instructions and apply the facial hair dye according to the directions -- different packages may have different directions.

    • 9

Mix the activator with the colorant, if the directions indicate this. Some come ready to be applied without any mixing.

    • 10

Brush the color onto the facial hair with the applicator, usually a small brush. Apply the color lightly. You can always apply more later.

    • 11

Wait the required amount of time as directed by the package instructions. This is usually between 5 to 10 minutes.

    • 12

Wash off the dye and allow it to dry. Check to see if the beard is now dark enough. If not, repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using the mascara, if it has dried and looks uneven, wet a paper towel to smudge and even it out. If you are using waterproof mascara, wet a paper towel with a little bit of makeup remover to smudge it.

  • With beard dye, it is important to use the same color as your natural hair color for a natural look.

  • Touch up the facial hair with the dye when it starts to fade or grow out.
