How to Improve Typing Efficiency

How to Improve Typing Efficiency thumbnail
Improve your typing speed and accuracy.

Typing efficiently is mainly about speed and accuracy. If you are a beginner, it is normal to take some time to get used to the keyboard and become familiar with the keys. Typing efficiently is not just about memorizing the exact positions of the keys, but about developing the speed and skill to press letters accurately. You have to "train" your fingers to develop a movement pattern that does not require you to look at the keys. These "movement patterns" can only be developed with repetition, so practice will help you improve.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down in an upright position and place your fingers correctly on the keyboard. Position the fingers on your left hand on the keys A, S, D and F. Place the fingers on your right hand on the keys J, K and L and ; (semi colon). Place both your thumbs on the space bar.

    • 2

Familiarize the keys and develop a comfortable arm/hand positioning that will help you type faster. You may start as a "hunt and peck" typist but with continuous practice, you will be able to master the keys and their positions.

    • 3

Practice typing without looking at the keyboard. Keep your eyes on the screen as you type. Play typing games online or download and install typing games in your computer to help you practice your skills.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have accustomed yourself to typing using one or two fingers or using random fingers to type random keys, you need to change the habit. This is because typing using random fingers will require you to look at the keyboard every time. Learning the proper hand positioning and typing without looking at the keyboard will significantly improve your typing speed.

  • Aside from typing games, you can also improve your typing efficiency through online chat, blogging, posting on forums and other activities that require keyboard use.
