Newsboy hats have become increasingly popular among both children and adults. They can be made from many different mediums. If you'd rather have the more traditional fabric look in a newsboy hat, it is not overly difficult to choose a fabric and make your own hat.
Step 1
Draw a triangle shape to make the cap body pattern. The bottom of the triangle should measure 3.625 inches, and the height of the triangle should measure 7 inches. Add a 1/2 inch seam allowance to the shape you just drew. Follow the dotted line outline as it appears on the diagram. Label this "Cap Body" and cut this pattern piece out.

Step 2
Draw a shape for the cap brim. The base of this shape should measure 2 inches, and from the right corner to the top corner should measure 6.5 inches. Follow the diagram to create the shape. Then, add a 1/2 inch seam allowance to the shape you just drew. Follow the dotted line outline as appears on the diagram. Label this "Cap Brim" and cut this pattern piece out along the dotted lines.
Step 3
Draw a shape for the cap band. The length of this shape should be 22.5 inches, and the height of this shape should be 3 inches. Label this "Cap Band" and cut this pattern piece out.
Step 4
Cut eight cap body pieces from the print fabric and eight cap body pieces from the contrast fabric.
Step 5
Decide whether your cap brim will be made with the print fabric or the contrast fabric. Fold whichever fabric will be used in half with the wrong side of the fabric out and place the base of the cap brim pattern piece on the fold. Cut two cap brim pieces from the fabric on the fold in this fashion. Fold the interfacing in the same way, and cut one cap brim piece from the interfacing.
Step 6
Cut two cap band pieces from the contrast fabric.
Step 7
Sew the cap body print fabric pieces together by placing right fabric sides together and matching edges and corners. Sew two pieces together and then add pieces one at a time to create the cap body. Sew the first and last cap body print pieces together to finish the body of the cap.
Step 8
Repeat step 1 with the contrast fabric pieces.
Step 9
Hold the sewn cap body so that all of the points of the body pieces are together. The sewn seams should be aligned going down and the top of the points should be lined up. Sew straight across the top of the points to close the top of the hat.
Step 10
Repeat step 3 with the contrast fabric pieces.
Step 11
Place the cap brim pieces together with right sides facing each other. Place the interfacing under the two brim pieces. Stitch around the curved edge only of the cap brim pieces with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Step 12
Turn the cap brim right side out. You should now have the interfacing between the two layers of the cap brim fabric. Press the cap brim well. Top stitch at least one row of stitching along the outside of the sewn seam.
Step 13
Match the short edges of each cap band fabric piece with right sides facing in. Stitch the short edges together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance to create circles.
Step 14
Measure around the edge of each circle and divide the circle into eight even sections. Place a pin at each measurement to indicate where the eight sections are.
Step 15
Place a pinned band onto the outer cap body with right sides facing each other. Match each seam on the cap body with a pin on the cap band. To fit the cap body to the cap band properly, it will be necessary to make a small pleat in each cap body section. Try to make all the pleats the same size and facing the same direction. Sew along the edge to attach the cap body to the cap band. Sew a line of top stitching along the outside where the cap body and cap band meet.
Step 16
Repeat step 9 with the contrast cap body and the other cap band.
Step 17
Place the contrast cap body inside the fabric cap with right sides together. Match all of the seams and edges, and pin carefully.
Step 18
Insert the brim in between the two cap body layers so that the raw edge of the brim matches the raw edges of the cap body layers. Pin along the edges to secure the brim inside the cap body layers.
Step 19
Sew one inch from the raw edge of the cap band all around the edge except stop to leave approximately two inches open for turning.
Step 20
Turn the cap right side out through the opening. Position the lining inside the outer cap body portion. Turn the raw edges of the opening in, and press the seams and edges. Top stitch along the bottom edge of the cap band, and sew the opening closed as you top stitch.
