How to Change Your Withholding From Married to Single

Employers are required by law to withhold taxes from an employee's paycheck based upon the information provided by the employee on Form W-4, Employee's Allowance Withholding Certificate. Employees can indicate how much to withhold based upon marital status and various allowances, including the number of dependents. If your withholding is based on a marital status of married and you want to change it to single, you can make this change at any time by notifying your employer.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your employer's payroll or human resources department and tell them that you'd like to change the marital status on your W-4. They will give you a new Form W-4 to complete.

    • 2

Fill out the form completely. Under section 3, check the box beside "Single." Complete the form using a pen, and sign and date it at the bottom.

    • 3

Return the form to your payroll or human resources department.

    • 4

Confirm the change on your next paycheck. This change will probably affect the amount withheld from your paycheck.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to recalculate the contribution made to your retirement account once you change your W-4, and decide if you need to change it.

  • Single employees usually have more money withheld from their paychecks than married employees.
