How to Get an Official W2
Form W-2 may be referred to as a wage and tax statement. Employers are required to send employers a W-2 by January 31st of each year. Employees use information contained on their W-2 to complete and file their federal and state tax returns. An employer has a requirement to send a copy of each employee's W-2 to the Internal Revenue Service. This form contains information about an employee such as the federal tax withheld, wages, tips, Medicare tax withheld and social security tax withheld. Information from Form W-2 must be entered accurately on a taxpayer's tax return to avoid an audit.

Contact your employer's payroll department. Depending on your company, you can walk into the payroll department and make a request to have your W-2 mailed. Call your company's payroll department to have a W-2 mailed, if you can't visit the payroll department in person. Verify your name and address to ensure the document gets sent to the proper location. Allow a reasonable amount of time for your employer to resend or issue your W-2, as explained by the IRS website.
