How to Make a Haircut Last Longer

Trim your bangs yourself rather than visiting the salon.

Hair stylists are trained to give clients a high-quality cut at the salon. But if you can't make it into the salon for frequent haircuts, there are ways to keep your hair looking healthy and stylish between visits. The key is to keep your hair as protected as possible from damage. Invest in high-quality styling products formulated to suit your hair type, whether that be straight and dry, color treated and frizzy or any other combination.

• Scissors
• Shampoo
• Leave-in conditioner
• Blow-dryer (optional)
• Heat-protecting styling product (optional)

• Tangle spray (optional)

Instructions

1. Request that your stylist provide you with a cut that requires little upkeep. Avoid styles that involve sharp angles or other precision cuts that would need to be replicated by a stylist as soon as the hair starts to grow out.

2. Trim your own bangs at home. Stand in front of a mirror and gather your bangs together at the center of your nose. Snip the bangs using a small pair of scissors, working carefully to avoid cutting off too much hair. Allow the bangs to fall back to their natural position and check for mistakes. Make adjustments with the bangs flat on your forehead.

3. Follow proper hair-care rituals to ward off split ends and other damage. Wash hair only every two to three days. Wash twice with shampoo and then apply a leave-in conditioner. Allow hair to air-dry or, if blow-drying, apply a styling product formulated for heat protection before using the blow-dryer. Brush your hair twice a day, and perform one of your daily brushing sessions right before you shower. Apply a spray for loosening tangles before brushing if your hair is particularly knotted.
