How to Crochet a Tutu Skirt
It's easy to find patterns for crocheted tutu tops with nylon tulle skirts. You can even find patterns for knitted tutu skirts, but if you only know how to crochet, your favorite ballerina's wardrobe may be lacking a crucial component. With some reverse engineering, you can crochet her a tutu skirt by turning a knitting pattern upside down, borrowing some techniques from a ruffled crocheted skirt, and taking advantage of the the tutu-like characteristics of a novelty ribbon yarn. The fluttery skirt is worked on a huge crochet hook, making fast work of this intriguing project.
Things You'll Need
- 2 oz. smooth synthetic worsted weight yarn
- Crochet hook, U.S. size G
- Scissors
- 200 yards novelty yarn with tulle shreds
- Crochet hook, U.S. size N or O

Chain 76 stitches using the size G hook and the worsted weight yarn. Slip stitch into the first chain to join the round.

Chain three and double crochet in each chain. Join with a slip stitch in the beginning chain.

Chain three. Double crochet in the next three stitches. Chain one, skip the next stitch, and double crochet in the next four stitches.

Alternate four double crochets with the chain one, skip a stitch sequence to the beginning of the round. Double crochet in the last stitch or two, and slip stitch into the beginning chain.

Chain three and work a double crochet in each stitch and chain-one space. Join the round with a slip stitch in the beginning chain-three space. Cut the yarn with scissors and fasten it.

Attach novelty yarn to the waistband in any stitch with a large hook. Chain three and double crochet in the next four stitches. Make two double crochets in the next stitch.

Work five double crochets. Make two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this increased sequence 10 more times, and join at the end of the round. You should have 88 stitches, the beginning chain-three counting as one double crochet.

Work rounds of one double crochet in each stitch until the skirt measures 3 inches from the beginning. Begin the next increase round by chaining three, double crochet in the next five stitches, and working two double crochets in the next stitch.

Double crochet in the following six stitches and make two double crochets in the next. Repeat this increased sequence to the end of the round, double crocheting in the last few stitches. You now have 100 stitches, with the starting chain-three counting as one double crochet.

Double crochet in each stitch of the next round. Work in double crochet until the skirt measures 6 inches from the waistband.

Chain three. Double crochet in each of the next six double crochets. Work two double crochets in the next stitch.

Double crochet in the next seven stitches. Make two double crochets in the next stitch. Repeat 10 more times and double crochet in the additional stitches at the end. You have 112 stitches, the beginning chain counting as a double crochet.

Work 3 inches of double crochet. Cut the yarn and fasten it off.

Use a size G hook and two strands of the worsted weight yarn, held together to make the draw string. Make 35 chain stitches. Cut the yarn and weave the end through the chain. Weave the drawstring through the holes of the waistband.

Tips & Warnings
You may have a leftover stitch or two at the end of a round. Work them in double crochet. The fullness of the skirt and the tulle strips of the yarn hide the necessary fudging. Evenly spacing the two double-crochet increases covers a multitude of sins.
Make the waistband a color that coordinates with the novelty yarn of the skirt.
