How to Make a Needlepoint Handbag

How to Make a Needlepoint Handbag thumbnail
You can make a small needlepoint project to incorporate into a handbag.

Depending on your skill level, you can create a needlepoint handbag as simple or sophisticated as you want. Work out the design for your needlepoint handbag by drawing or painting your ideas on a piece of paper ahead of time. This way, you can measure the size and shape of your needlepoint project, and work it into the size and shape of the purse you plan to embellish.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the pattern you want to create. Make note of the colors, using paint or a colored pencil, so you can better visualize how to execute your design. Take measurements of your purse, so you will know how large to make the project.

    • 2

Sketch the exact shape of the purse onto the embroidery cloth.

    • 3

Secure a piece of embroidery fabric to an embroidery loop, and clip it in place. You will want to make sure the fabric is stretched taut.

    • 4

Embroider your design onto the space inside the embroidery hoop. You may want to lightly sketch your design onto the embroidery cloth with a pencil or sewer's chalk first, so you have a better idea of where to put the details.

    • 5

Remove the embroidered cloth from the hoop, and cut away the excess cloth around the edges of your design. Give yourself about a half an inch of spare room along the edges, so you can finish the edges.

    • 6

Use a needle and thread to stitch along the edge of your fabric about halfway between the edge and your pattern. This will finish the edge of your cloth.

    • 7

Fold the half inch of extra fabric under -- along the edges of the cloth.

    • 8

Pin the embroidered cloth into place on your purse.

    • 9

Sew the cloth onto your purse, starting from the inside of the purse, removing the pins as you work. Make small stitches on the outside; so they do not show through on your design.
