How to Knit a Scarf for Kids in a Way that is Easy to Understand
When learning how to knit, a scarf makes an easy first project. A scarf is long and rectangular. Basic knitting skills, such as the knit stitch, cast-on and bind-off are all that is necessary to learn to make a basic scarf. Add in different stitch patterns as you become more proficient at knitting and use the basic scarf pattern as a starting point.

Cast on 30 stitches. This will make a scarf approximately 7 inches wide.

Knit in garter stitch until the scarf is the desired length. Garter stitch is worked by knitting every stitch on every row. A commonly used rhyme to remember the steps in a knit stitch is "In through the front door, Once around the back, Peek through the window, and off jumps Jack."

Bind off all stitches. Knit two stitches, and then pass the first stitch on the right-hand needle over the second stitch. Work one more stitch, and then pass the first stitch on the right-hand needle over the second. Continue knitting one more stitch and passing the last stitch over it until you have bound off all stitches.

Cut the yarn and pull through the remaining stitch on the needle.

Tips & Warnings
After you are proficient in the knit stitch, add new techniques such as the purl stitch. Combine patterns and build a scarf with the combined patterns, showcasing your various skills.
