How to Knit Thin Scarves

Knit a thin scarf with DK-weight yarn.

The best part about knitting your own scarves is that you control the fiber, color, length and width. How wide your scarf is depends on three factors -- the weight of your yarn, the tension with which you knit and the number of stitches you cast on. DK-weight yarn, or lightweight yarn, knitted on size 5 needles will result in a lightweight scarf with relatively small stitches. Although every knitter's tension is slightly different, you can expect DK-weight yarn on size 5 needles to knit up at roughly six stitches per inch.

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on six stitches for every 1 inch of width. For example, if you want your scarf to be 4 inches wide, cast on 24 stitches. Certain stitch patterns may call for a specific number of stitches; adjust your cast-on accordingly.

    • 2

Work in the stitch pattern of your choice until the scarf is as long as you want it to be.

    • 3

      Bind off all stitches.

    • 4

Snip the working yarn with a pair of scissors, leaving a 4-inch tail. Thread the tail through the eye of a darning needle.

    • 5

Weave the yarn tail into the bind-off edge by sewing from front to back, then back to front, alternating with each stitch until the tail is no longer visible. As an alternative, adorn the ends of the scarf with a decorative fringe, which will hide the tail and prevent the need for weaving.
