How to Make a Patch for an Inflatable Tub

Inflatables can be patched if the damage isn't too severe.

Inflatable tubs, kiddie pools and rafts are all very similar, though the methods of construction might be different. A watertight material is filled with air, creating walls to hold in water or, alternatively, to keep it out while people ride in it. If you develop a hole in your inflatable tub, it is quite possible to patch it. You simply need piece of the material large enough to cover the hole, and the proper adhesive to seal it.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the hole and deflate the tub. Once the tub is deflated, measure the size of the hole so you know how big to make your patch. Holes can be pin-sized or larger, but the smaller the hole, the easier it is to patch.

    • 2

Clean the surface of the inflatable all around the hole. You want it to be clean and dirt-free, smooth and ready to bond with a patch. Dirt or other materials can weaken the bond with adhesive, and make your patch fail.

    • 3

Cut a piece of the original inflatable material to cover the size of the hole, and add 1 inch. Apply a layer of adhesive around the hole. Press your patch flat so it seals firmly, and hold it there. Wait for the adhesive to fully dry, according to directions on the adhesive you use.

    • 4

Inflate the tub. Use gentle air pressure and inflate it slowly, watching your patch to be sure that it holds in air. Cover the patch with water and soap, then look for bubbles. If no air escapes, the patch is successful.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use adhesives designed to work with the material of your inflatable. Recommendations can be found in the owner's manual, but rubber cement is usually a safe bet, if it's meant to be used at the pressures your inflatable is expected to endure.
