Crochet edging adds style and flair to a T-shirt.

If you know the basics of how to crochet, you can give your plain T-shirts some flair by adding crochet edging. You'll need a shirt with a ribbed cuff and neck line. To maintain the scale of the purchased T-shirt, use cotton crochet thread and a small metal crochet hook--like the ones used by doily-makers--for your edging. Cotton crochet thread is available in a wide variety of colors at craft stores and knitting supply shops. A pastel-toned crochet edging would add a charming touch to a young girl's T-shirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread your sewing needle with 36 inches of cotton thread. Knot one end of the thread. Sew wrap stitches around the ribbed cuff of one T-shirt sleeve. Space the stitches 1/4 inch from the cuff edge and 1/4 inch apart. Knot and cut the thread.

Insert your metal crochet hook in one wrap stitch. Pull the cotton crochet thread strand through the wrap stitch with the hook. Grab the crochet thread strand with the hook a second time and pull it through the loop on the hook to make a chain stitch. Repeat with each wrap stitch around the cuff.

    • 3

Make a single crochet stitch in the first chain stitch by inserting the crochet hook in the first chain stitch, grabbing the loose cotton crochet thread strand with the hook and pulling it through the chain. Then, grab another loose strand and pull it through the two loops on the hook. Repeat, making five single crochet stitches in each chain. Cut and knot the cotton crochet thread.

Repeat steps 1-3 on the remaining T-shirt ribbed cuff and the ribbed neck line.
