How to Make Gangster Costumes

How to Make Gangster Costumes thumbnail
Create your own gangster costume using things from your closet or thrift store.

Movies, books and television shows have given generations a look at the famous and infamous men and women of the 1920s. Movies such as "The Godfather" franchise, "Road to Perdition" and "The Untouchables" romanticized the 1920s and gangsters. To create a gangster costume for your next Halloween costume or school play, draw inspiration from the well-tailored and groomed look of the gangsters of the time.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a solid black, double-breasted suit with black dress shirt. Dry clean and press the suit and shirt to get a crisp look, especially if you purchase the clothing from a thrift store. If possible, use a zoot suit. Zoot suits have high waists and long coat hems. Tuck the shirt into the pants. Wear a black leather belt.

    • 2

Wear a white tie with the dress shirt.

    • 3

Wear black socks and black dress shoes. Polish the shoes first to give them a high shine.

    • 4

Put hair gel in your hands and run it through your hair. Use a comb to smooth the hair and part it on the side. Keep the base flat and smooth.

    • 5

Attach a red carnation to the lapel of the jacket. Use either a fresh flower or silk flower, as desired. Use a hatpin or safety pin to attach it.

    • 6

Wear a black fedora to finish the look.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you want a pinstripe suit and cannot find one, use a solid black suit. Use a piece of tailor's chalk and draw the lines on.

  • Look for clothing and accessories at the local thrift or vintage store. Costume stores carry gangster-style costume accessories.

  • If you prefer, replace the black shirt with a white shirt, and pair it with a black tie.

  • If desired, use black hair dye to color your hair.

  • Add a red or white 1-inch ribbon around the hat to add more pizazz. Attach the ribbon using hot glue.

  • Another accessory choice is a replica of a Tommy gun. Or, wear a vest under the jacket and place a gold pocket watch in the pocket.
