How to Manage Lots of Tweets

Twitter is a paradox. The more you Tweet, the more Tweets you get and the less time you have to Tweet. You can quickly become buried under an avalanche unless you learn to manage them. While a number of third-party extensions exist for Twitter, some of the best tools exist within Twitter itself. The one exception is TweetDeck, which started out as a third-party extension but was acquired by Twitter in May 2011.

Instructions

  1. Within Twitter

    • 1

Log in to Twitter. Click on "Profile" at the top and then click on the word "followings" located under your profile icon and biography on the right hand side. This should get you a list of people you follow.

    • 2

Click on the name of one of the people you follow to see his profile.

    • 3

Click on the round button with the phone icon (that looks like an iPod) to have this person's tweets sent to your mobile phone. This can only be done if you have activated your mobile phone with Twitter. Do this for any people you always want to get Tweets from.

    • 4

Click on the green "Retweet" button to prevent retweets from this person from appearing in your profile.

    • 5

Favorite any Tweets that you like and want to make note of by clicking on "favorite." The favorite option only appears if you hover over the Tweet. It is located to the right of the time the Tweet was posted.

    • 6

Search for Tweets on a certain topic by typing in words in the search box above where you enter Tweets. You can limit searches by placing phrases in quotes and placing a minus sign (-) in front of words you want to filter out. Placing "to:" or "from:" in front of a Twitter name allows you to show only Tweets sent to or by a person.

    Creating Lists

    • 7

Create special lists in Twitter. Lists help you organize people into groups. Looking at a group filters out all other Tweets from people you follow. Even better, you don't need to follow someone just to have her on a list. So, if you're a secret Survivor fan but don't want everyone who follows you on Twitter to know, you can create a list that shows Jeff Probst Tweets without actually following him.

    • 8

Click on the first user you want to add to the list to see his profile.

    • 9

Click and hold the person icon (located to the right of the following button) to bring up the drop-down actions menu.

    • 10

      Select "Add to List."

    • 11

Select "Create a list." Enter in the name of the list, a description and select either "public" (if other people can follow it) or private (if you don't want others to see it).

    • 12

Add more people to your list by repeating Steps 2 and 3. Instead of creating a list, you only have to check the box next to the list. You can also do this to check that people are on the list since a check mark will show up next to the lists they are on.

    Using TweetDeck

    • 13

Go to the TweetDeck website. Click on "Desktop." Download and install the application.

    • 14

Add your Twitter, Facebook and other social media accounts to TweetDeck by allow the program to guide you through the process. If you forget to add an account, click on the plus sign next to the person icon at the top of the page to add it later.

    • 15

Create columns of the things you want to follow by clicking on the plus button at the top left hand side of the page. You can have a column that shows Tweets from your friends, from lists or mentions.

    • 16

Refine the columns by using the buttons at the bottom of each column. These buttons allow you to filter out seen Tweets, show which Tweets are most popular and move columns around. Hover your mouse over the button to find out what it does.
