How to Make a Brochure Layout

Make a brochure layout yourself and then print it at home.

Brochures are both informative and portable, allowing people to learn about a new idea or environment without having to carry around a lot of extra weight. If you need a brochure for your business or organization, you can purchase templates online or at a copy store. Unfortunately, this can be expensive. A thrifty alternative is to create the brochure yourself at home. You can make your layout using Microsoft Office Word and then print the final product using your home printer.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Office Word 2007 or later
  • Printer
  • Heavier-weight printer paper

Instructions

    • 1

Create a rough sketch of your brochure on a sheet of scrap paper. Divide it into three columns and decide what you want in each column. Remember, brochures are usually double-sided, so take the back of the brochure into consideration when you're designing.

    • 2

Open Microsoft Office Word and create a new blank document.

    • 3

Click the "Page Layout" tab at the top of the window, and then click the "Columns" button. A drop-down menu will appear with a list of numbers. Click "Three" to set up three columns on your page.

    • 4

Click the tiny downward-pointing arrow near the "Page Setup" option under the "Page Layout" tab. A pop-up dialogue box will appear with settings options. Click the "Landscape" icon to change your page orientation.

    • 5

Set your top and bottom margins to 0.5 inches. Set your left and right margins to 0.25 inches. Click "OK" to save your settings and exit the "Page Setup" dialogue box.

    • 6

Insert your cursor in the first column. Hit F4 on your keyboard to automatically move to the next column. Continue hitting F4 until you have six columns (three on one page and three on another page).

    • 7

Click the Microsoft Office button in the upper left-hand corner of your window to open a menu. Click the "Word Options" button at the bottom of the menu to open a new window. Click the "Advanced" option on the left-hand side of the window and then check the "Show Text Boundaries" box. This will allow you to see your columns on your brochure layout.

Type up your brochure as you designed it in the first step. You can add clip art by clicking the "Insert" tab at the top of the window and then selecting "WordArt." You also can add images that are on your computer by clicking the "Insert" followed by the "Picture" icon.

Print the first page of your document on one side of your paper, then print the second page of your document on the back of this same paper. Fold your brochure according to your original design to complete it.
