How to Do a Man's Haircut
Determining how long a man wants his hair to be and using the proper styling tools are the keys to giving a man a good haircut. Many men simply want a short, even style that will take them from the office to the restaurant or bar without too much maintenance. For this reason, men's cuts tend to be fairly simple. However, some longer cuts require more styling during the haircut the make the end result look good. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Discuss with the man whose hair you are cutting what style of haircut he wants and how long he wants his hair to be after the haircut. Offer suggestions if he is unsure about what he is looking for. Ask questions about his lifestyle, such as what kind of work he does or what type of recreational activities he likes; this will help you narrow down styling options. For example, someone who goes to the beach often may want to go with a longer, surfer-style cut, while a man who travels on the road for business may want a very short haircut all the way around to keep it low maintenance. Suggest haircuts that might be flattering for the man's face and frame.

Brush or comb the hair on the top, sides and back of the head in the general direction of growth.

3
Select the correct size clipper gate for electric hair clippers, which will be determined by how much of the hair needs to be cut. For example, for styles that are to be cut closer to the scalp, go with a shorter clipper gate, while a longer hair style would require a larger clipper gate. If the cut requires multiple lengths, start with the gate that's appropriate for the longest portion of the hairstyle. Secure the gate to the clippers by clicking it into place.

4
Begin cutting at the top of the head, starting at the front hairline and working back to the nape of the neck. Cut downward in the direction of growth, unless the chosen hairstyle dictates otherwise. Hold the clippers at a slight angle, with the clipper gate and blade moving forward. Use the same angle all over the head for an even cut. After the top center row is cut, start at the front of the head beside the first row and work your way back again along the new row. Repeat this process, working your way down each side of head in rows until all of the hair is cut. Visually check the length to verify that it is correct for the desired cut.

5
Select a smaller gate and attach it to the clippers for hairstyle that have varying lengths, such as a pompadour or a fade. Cut all of the hair on the head in the same manner as before, except where you want it to remain longer. Repeat with an even smaller gate if needed until you achieve the shape and length desired for the haircut.
-
6
Remove the gate from the clippers and set the clipper setting to the lowest point. Shave hair on the back of the neck below the back hairline and trim any hair behind the ears by keeping the bottom part of the blade flush with the skin. Pull the ears gently away from the scalp to shave carefully behind them.

7
Trim hair in front, around the ears and anywhere that you see unevenness, using the fine teeth of a cutting comb and sharp scissors. Style as desired using hair styling products such as mousse, hairspray, or styling gel.
