How to Build a Bolster Pillow

Bolster pillows have a specific rounded, oblong shape that sets them apart from other pillows and cushions. They can be used for comfort and decor on couches, window seats, armchairs or even on beds. Because of their unique shape, bolster pillows can be hard to find in stores and can be expensive. However, any intermediate sewer can make an inexpensive bolster pillow from home. Instructions

    • 1

Lay the fabric face down on a table and use a yardstick to measure 25.75 inches down and 22.25 inches across. Mark these measurements with a piece of white chalk.

    • 2

Use the measurements and markings from Step 1 to cut out a 25.75-inch by 22.25-inch panel of fabric.

    • 3

Fold the fabric panel in half with the right sides of the fabric facing each other, bringing the two long edges together.

    • 4

Sew the long edges together, leaving a 6-inch opening in the middle. This will form the base of the pillow. Press the seam flat, using an iron and ironing board.

    • 5

Spread out more fabric on the table and place the circle template on top of it.

    • 6

Trace the circle pattern with white chalk and follow the chalk line to cut out a circle of fabric. Repeat this step to make a second fabric circle of the same size.

    • 7

Pin the circular fabric pieces to the open ends of the base of the pillow, with the right side of the fabric facing inward.

    • 8

Sew the circular pieces of fabric to the base of the pillow. Clip the curves to release tension on the seam, but be careful not to cut into the stitching. Press the seam open, using an iron and ironing board.

    • 9

Turn the pillow right side out, using the 6-inch opening in the long seam, and stuff it full of cotton quilt batting.

    • 10

Hand-sew the 6-inch opening closed, using a slip stitch. Keep your stitches small and neat so they are not conspicuous.
