How to Make a Titanic Cutout

How to Make a Titanic Cutout thumbnail
Large ships, like the Titanic, have multiple smoke stacks.

A Titanic cutout is slightly more complicated than other paper cutout projects due to the details in the ship. However, with a hobby knife, time and a little bit of patience, you can produce a realistic and low-cost Titanic cutout. The cutout can be used as art for your walls or pasted onto invitations for a party. Give yourself ample time to complete the project as cutting around small details can often take more time than anticipated.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an outline of Titanic onto a piece of paper. Note all of the windows, railings, smoke stacks and masts. If you cannot draw the ship, use the Titanic images from National Geographic or other sources as a guide.

    • 2

Place the drawing of the ship onto a piece of transfer paper. The transfer paper should be dark side down as the dark substance is what transfers onto the paper of your final product. Clip your three pieces of paper (drawing, transfer paper and final piece of paper) together to prevent movement during the tracing process. Trace the outline of the drawing. When you lift the paper, you should see the outline on your final piece of paper.

    • 3

Cut out the ship. Use scissors for the blunt ends and sides, and a hobby knife for the smaller, hard-to-reach parts. When using a hobby knife, hold the paper taut with your fingers and firmly push against the cutting surface. Poke the paper with the sharp end of the knife and drag is along the line. Move the paper so you are always pulling the knife toward you, providing the most control.

    • 4

Cut out additional aspects of the ship, such as the windows or railings, from another piece of paper and paste them onto the original outline for a 3-D look. Making the cutout 3-D is optional if you have confidence in your cutting abilities.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the paper ripples while cutting, change the blade on your craft knife.
