A firmware update may help fix focus problems on a Canon 40D.

The Canon EOS 40D is a prosumer digital SLR camera with a 10.1 megapixel sensor and 9 autofocus points. With its 6.5 frames-per-second shooting rate, the 40D is a very good action photography camera. Like all digital SLRs, the 40D requires firmware to run, and Canon has issued several firmware upgrades to fix problems since the camera was released. If you are having autofocus issues with tracking, which some users have reported, you should upgrade to the latest firmware.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the firmware version of your 40D by pressing "Menu" on your 40D, then rotating the "Main Dial" to select the third setup screen (the yellow wrench), then rotating the "Quick Dial" so that "Firm. Vers." is highlighted.

    • 2

Visit the Canon Support page (web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/eos40d/eos40d-firmware-e.html) to check the most recent firmware update to see if it matches what is on your camera.

    • 3

Plug your CompactFlash card into the card reader on your computer and download the latest firmware to the memory card.

    • 4

Power down the camera and insert the memory card, then power the camera back on.

    • 5

Scroll to the "Firm. Vers." screen again and press "Set" on your camera.

    • 6

Rotate the "Quick Dial" at the next screen (Firmware Update) so that "OK" is highlighted, then press set.

    • 7

Press "Set" again when the camera flashes the message "Update is Complete. "

    • 8

Power the camera off and remove the battery for at least two seconds to allow the firmware update to complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a half-charged battery and the camera experiences a power failure during the upgrade, the camera may become inoperable. Make sure to use a fully-charged battery, and do not open the memory card door until the upgrade is complete.

  • Make sure to use a formatted memory card and not one with photos on it, or the camera may not be able to find the firmware download.
