How to Make a Character Out of a Photo in Poser
Many times when working in 3D graphics, artists find themselves wanting to make a figure that looks like a particular person. This can be a daunting task if you are starting from scratch. Fortunately, if you have the Poser application sold by Smith Micro, you can use one of its base characters for your model and then use the "Face Room" in Poser to apply photos of the person you want to make a 3D face for.

1
Load on your computer two square photos taken from the front and side of a person's head. The subject should be directly in front of the camera and the lighting should be uniform. An unadorned white background makes it easier to work with the photos.

2
Start the Poser application. Go to the Poser Library on the right and choose the figure you want to use in the Face Room.

3
Click on the "Face Room" icon at the top. Click on the "Load" button. Browse to and select the front image you loaded. Position the points in the dialog where the program tells you. The purpose here is to tell the program where certain key features are, such as the edge of the mouth of the eyes. Repeat this process with the side image.

4
Evaluate the result. If it is not quite right, you can manually adjust the positions of the points and the lines between them.

5
Click "Apply to Figure." Click on the "Pose Room" tab. Select "File" from the menu at the top and click "Save." In the dialog, name the file and save it.
