How to Detangle an Acrylic Wig

Keep your wig sleek and tangle-free.

The acrylic fibers of synthetic wigs require special attention. Although these wigs can be very realistic in their appearance, they cannot be cared for in the same way as human hair wigs. One of the drawbacks of acrylic fiber wigs is the tendency of the fibers to tangle. Improper storage, as well as the rubbing of the wig against your collar or the back of chairs, can lead to the ends of acrylic wigs becoming kinky and knotted. Learning how to effectively detangle your wig will keep it looking attractive longer.

Things You'll Need

• Wide-toothed comb
• Detangling or sheen spray

Instructions

1. Wash your wig in a basin of cool water that contains mild shampoo and conditioner. Do not scrub the wig, but rather swirl it around in the water, allowing the shampoo to clean it and the conditioner to soften the fibers. This will make detangling easier.

2. Dry your wig on a wig stand, allowing it to drip dry. Do not scrub it with a towel or wring it out.

3. Spray your fully dried wig with a detangling spray or a sheen spray.

4. Style your wig as usual.

Tips & Warnings

• Spiral curl and dreadlock wigs should not be combed or brushed in any way, as this will undo the curls/dreads.
