How to Format Macbooks
To reinstall the operating system on your Macbook or prepare it for sale to someone, you should format the Macbook's hard drive to erase all of your data. This process cleans the drive and prepares it for a new operating system to be installed. Because formatting results in the loss of any programs and files you have added to the system, make sure to back up your data to an external hard drive or similar device.

Power off your Macbook and ensure it is plugged in.

Insert your OS X installation disc into the Macbook, then power it up.

Select your language, then click "Utilities" and "Disk Utilities."

Click on your hard drive, then click "Erase."

Type in a new name for the drive, select "Mac OS Extended" as the drive format, then click "Erase" again to perform the formatting operation.
