Adding a knitted patch pocket to a scarf adds dimension to your project.

Adding a patch pocket to a homemade scarf is not only quite quick and easy, but it can add a splash of color and a unique place for little items or hands. Knit the patch pocket in a different color for contrast. Adding personal touches--such as pockets--to homemade scarves, makes a gift even more special. To knit this easy pattern for a garter stitch patch pocket, you'll need to know how to cast on, knit, bind off and sew.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn of the same weight as the scarf
  • Knitting needles that correspond to the yarn
  • Blunt, large-eye needle

Instructions

    • 1

Cast on approximately 10 stitches--depending on the weight of the yarn and how wide you want the pocket to be.

    • 2

Work in garter stitch--knit every stitch--until the piece reaches four inches or your desired length.

    • 3

Bind off and weave in loose ends.

    • 4

Decide where to position the pocket; such pockets are usually near the ends of the scarf.

    • 5

Sew up the sides and the bottom of the patch using a large-eye blunt needle. Repeat these steps for the other end.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embroider a chain stitch motif on the pocket for even more personalization--try a flower or heart.

  • Work a knit one, purl one rib for a few rows at the beginning and work the rest in stockinette as an alternative to garter stitch.
