How to Knit a Single Color Scarf With Fringe

Add pizazz to a plain single color scarf by adding fringe to the ends. The fringe can be done in any color of yarn. Use the same color as the rest of the scarf or add a contrast color. The scarf is knit in a simple belt welt stitch, which keeps the piece flat without curling at the edges and provides a reversible fabric -- perfect for a scarf.

Instructions

    • 1

      Cast on 26 stitches.

    • 2

Knit all stitches on rows one and three.

    • 3

Purl all stitches on rows two and four.

    • 4

On rows five and seven, knit two stitches. Purl four stitches then knit two stitches and repeat to the end of the row.

    • 5

On row six and eight, purl two stitches. Knit four stitches then purl two stitches and repeat to the end of the row.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 2-5 until the scarf is the desired length. Bind off all stitches and cut yarn, leaving a 6-inch tail of yarn.

    • 7

Cut multiple strips of yarn approximately 12 inches long. Each strand is one strand of fringe. Cut at least 26 pieces for each end. Add more if desired.

    • 8

Thread a strand of yarn onto the tapestry needle. Pull through the first cast on stitch at the edge of the work. Pull until both sides of the fringe are even. Knot the two ends together to secure. Repeat with each stitch along the cast on edge. Repeat for the bind off edge.

Tips & Warnings

  • With a larger tapestry needle, you can thread more than one strand of yarn through the eye of the needle. Use two or three strands for a heavily fringed scarf.
