How to Change a Rectangular Marquee to an Elliptical Marquee in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop may have some fancy names for its selection tools, such as marquees, a lasso and a magic wand, but they all serve the same purpose --- to help users designate certain areas of their images to apply an action such as filling with color or cutting. The marquee collection includes a rectangle and circle shape, ideal for selecting areas with rectangular, square or elliptical shapes. Going from one to the other is just a matter of selecting that tool from its small icon fly-out menu. All the marquee tools "hide" behind a single icon square, so select yours and mark with the marquee.

Start Photoshop. You do not have to actually open an image to see the marquee tools and make changes.

2
Right-click the "Rectangular Marquee Tool," second icon from the top of the "Tools" column. If you do not see the "Tools" column, click the "Window" menu and click the "Tools" option on the bottom of the drop-down menu.

Click "Elliptical Marquee Tool" from the fly-out menu. The dotted square changes to a dotted circle and will remain in place each time you open, use and close Photoshop until you change the tool.
