Make a square by typing on your keyboard to insert a square character into a document or Web page without having to draw it in another program. Alt codes are programming codes that allow you to form foreign language characters, currency symbols and even geometric shapes -- like squares -- using a combination of numbers and the alt key on your computer. Alt codes for several different types of square shapes exist.

Step 1

Click your mouse inside the document or field where you want to make the square. Since making a square involves a combination of keys, having to delete and recreate the square gets tiresome, so make sure you type in the correct place as you begin.

Hold down the "Alt" key, and then type "9632" to form a large, solid square. To form a small solid square, type "Alt" plus "9642."

Create the outline of a large square by typing "Alt" plus "9633." To form a small square outline, type "Alt," then "9643."
