Take proper precautions when shaving the back of your neck to avoid razor bumps.

Razor burn or razor bumps, scientifically known as Pseudofolliculitis barbae, occurs when curved hairs grow into the skin and cause an immune response in the body, resulting in raised bumps on the skin. The hair under the skin is sharp and, when it regrows, is harmful to your skin. Razor bumps can appear on any place you shave including legs, armpits, face, neck and back of the head on the neck. Take measures to prevent razor burn to avoid unnecessary skin irritation. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wet the hair and apply a moisturizing shaving cream or conditioner to the hair on the back of your neck. Water softens the hair, making it easier to cut.

    • 2

Use a sharp razor to cut the hair, lessening the chances of leaving blunt ends or pulling on hair. Shave the back of your head and neck from the top to the bottom, rinsing your blade in between each stroke.

    • 3

Wait two or three days in between shaving to give your skin a rest from the razor. Shaving too often irritates skin.

    • 4

Apply a washcloth soaked in hot water directly to the area after shaving to relax the hair follicles. If your skin is sensitive or easily irritated, apply hydrocortisone cream to reduce redness and give the skin some relief.

    • 5

Do not pick at or poke razor bumps if they appear, as it will irritate them and can lead to an infection.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your razor thoroughly in between each use to kill bacteria, which thrives in wet conditions. You can also rinse it with rubbing alcohol for a more effective cleanse.
