How to Use the Gmail SMTP Server for a Newsletter

You can use the Gmail SMTP server to send a newsletter to a group of 500 people or less. Gmail places a limitation of sending 500 emails at one time to prevent people from using the free email service to send junk mail or spam. Creating a contact group in Gmail is relatively simple and once you have a group set up, then you can send the newsletter to that group each month directly from the Gmail online interface.

Instructions

  1. Create a Group

    • 1

Go to gmail.com and sign in to your account.

    • 2

Click the "Contacts" option from the left sidebar. On the next screen, click the "New Group" link. A pop-up window appears.

    • 3

Type a name for the group, such as "Newsletter" or something similar. Click the "OK" button.

    • 4

Go to the "My Contacts" group, which should be a listing of all your contacts. Check the box for each contact you want to add to the "Newsletter" contact group.

    • 5

Click the "Groups" button and select "Newsletter" or the name of the group you want to add those contacts to. Click the "Apply" option to add.

    Email a Group

    • 6

Log in to your Gmail account and click the "Compose Mail" button near the top of the left column.

    • 7

Go to the "To" field on the "Compose Mail" screen and type the group name. Your group name should begin to auto-populate with the "(group)" label appended to the end.

    • 8

Press the "Enter" key to select that group. The names and email addresses will automatically fill in the "To" field box.

    • 9

Type a "Subject" for your email and paste the newsletter text into the body of the message. Click the "Send" button to send your newsletter to everyone in that contact group.
