How to Make an Origami Lid

Complete an origami box with matching lid.

Mention origami and most people think of paper animals. The crane with flapping wings is an elementary art class mainstay. However, origami also serves needs that are more utilitarian. These paper objects may lack aesthetics, but they compensate with purpose. The origami box's plain design serves one of the most basic purposes, a container. Yet a container without a lid doesn't contain things very well. Luckily, creating a simple square origami lid is an easy task.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the square origami paper in half, along a horizontal line.

    • 2

Fold the paper in half again, along a vertical line. The paper should be square and a quarter of its original size.

    • 3

Unfold the paper, revealing a crease dividing four equal squares.

    • 4

Fold all four corners into the paper's center.

    • 5

Fold two opposite sides of the square towards the center, but only 4/5 of the way. Do not fold to the center itself. Unfold both sides after making a crease.

    • 6

Repeat Step 5 with the other two opposite sides.

    • 7

Open two of the triangular flaps, created in Steps 1 and 2, each on opposite sides of the square.

    • 8

Fold the other two unopened sides towards the center, but only 4/5 of the way. Unfold each side half way, so that they stand at a vertical 90-degree angle. The paper's shape should resemble a rectangle with triangular points at both ends. The upturned lengths are the initial two sides of the lid.

    • 9

Fold one of the pointed flaps upwards, to a vertical 90-degree angle, along the existing crease nearest to the rectangle's center; approximately 2/3 of the way.

    • 10

Fold the flap downward, creating a side that is flush in height with its neighboring two sides. Tuck the triangular tip beneath the other sides' triangular tips, at the base of the lid.

    • 11

Repeat Steps 9 and 10 with the remaining pointed flap. The result should be a square lid with four upturned sides of equal height.
