How to Make a Petti Tu

Costumes are an essential part of dress-up games.

The world of dress-up is a magical one for little girls. They can be princesses, ballerinas, fairies and other delightful creatures. All that's required are two things: imagination and costuming. One versatile addition to a little girl's costume closet is a petti tu. This is a combination of a pettiskirt (a short ruffled skirt) and a tutu (a ballerina skirt made primarily of tulle). Pair a petti tu with a princess hat for a princess costume, or match it with a leotard and tights for a ballerina. Adding a pair of wings creates a fairy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your child's waist, hips and height. Select the right size tutu pattern according to her measurements.

    • 2

Measure the amount of elastic needed for the waistband -- the waist measurement minus 2 inches. Cut the elastic to the appropriate length, overlap the ends and sew them together to form the waistband.

    • 3

Cut out the pattern pieces. Lay them on top of the tulle material. Cut out the tulle pieces minus the first tier, as this will make it a petti tu. Lay the first tier pattern pieces on top of the satin fabric. Cut out the fabric pieces. Sew each tier's pieces together.

    • 4

Gather each tier to fit the elastic waistband. Put the tiers one on top of each other. Pin them to the waistband, and sew them in place. Fold the bottom edges of the satin tier under to form a hem; pin it in place and sew. You do not need to do this on the tulle tiers, as tulle does not unravel and does not need to have finished edges.

    • 5

Cut out a piece of satin fabric as long as the waistband plus 1 inch and as wide as the elastic plus 1 1/2 inches. Sew the short sides of the fabric together with right sides together, using a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

    • 6

Fold under 1/2 inch of fabric along the top and bottom edges. Fold in half lengthwise and pin it in place to cover the elastic waistband. Sew along the bottom edges of the fabric band to secure it to the skirt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embellish the petti tu with colorful ribbons and bows or beading.
