How to Build Scrolling Paper
If you are teaching your children about how "books" first were made and written, you can make your own scrolls of paper. Your children can create their personal manuscripts using these scrolls or use them to write special notes and memories. You can also secure the scrolls of paper together with decorative fabric ribbon that can be loosened each time your children want to add to their scrolls.

- Wax paper
- 2 wooden dowels
- Acrylic craft paint
- Paper plate

1
Line a table with wax paper and place two dowels on the surface.

2
Squeeze acrylic craft paint in a gold or silver metallic hue onto a paper plate. Dip a sponge brush in the paint and apply the paint on the dowels. Coat the dowels evenly and allow the paint to dry.

Squeeze a line of hot glue across the top border of the paper roll. You may need to place a heavy object -- such as a coffee mug -- on each corner of the paper to keep it from curling. Immediately press onto the top of the first dowel, positioning the paper so that it is roughly in the middle of the dowel. Allow the glue to dry and then roll about half of the paper around the first dowel. Repeat this step with the remaining dowel and the end of the paper roll.

Pull the top and bottom part of the scroll apart to reveal a blank writing space. Write in the space, allow the ink to dry and close the scroll. Wrap a 6-inch length of fabric ribbon around the middle of the scroll and tie the ribbon into a loose bow.
