How to Move a Projection TV Safely
Projection televisions are among the largest and heaviest TVs you can buy. They use a bright light that is filtered through colored lenses and then projected onto a reflective television screen. Since the projection process magnifies the size of the image, very large screen sizes are possible, but the lamp and projection components are heavy and fragile. They must be moved by at least two people and the base of the unit must remain level to prevent misalignment of the projection equipment.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Masking tape
- Moving gloves
- Furniture dolly

1
Measure the doors through which you'll be moving the projection TV. Compare the measurements to the width, height and depth measurements of the TV. If you can't make it through one door, look for an alternative door. Set your moving plan from beginning to end before you pick up the TV.
-
2
Power off the TV and unplug it. Remove any components plugged into it. Tape the power cord to the side of the TV with the masking tape. Remove any obstacles from your path. Let the TV sit for at least 30 minutes for the lamp to cool down before moving it.

3
Position the furniture dolly about six inches in front of the TV. Have one person on the left side and one person on the right and gently lift the projection TV up and then forward onto the dolly. Set it down so the dolly takes the weight of the TV. Wear moving gloves to protect your hands.
-
4
Roll the TV slowly to the next location. If you have steps in the way, have two people pick up the TV and a third person remove the dolly. Walk down the stairs slowly with the bottom person lifting the TV up and the top person holding the TV down so it remains roughly level as it's carried down the stairs. Set it on the dolly at the bottom of the stairs and continue rolling it.
-
5
Secure the TV in a moving truck or van by wrapping it in moving pads or blankets and then tying it securely in place. The TV shouldn't shift or move during transport.
-
6
Repeat the process of loading the TV onto the furniture dolly and moving it into the new location. Remove the tape holding the power cord and connect the TV to power and the A/V sources.

Tips & Warnings
If you have to go over rough ground, don't roll the TV, as the jostling can damage the projection equipment. Get extra people to help carry it if you can't roll it.
Some projection TVs have removable screens that make them easier to move. Check your owner's manual to see if you can remove your screen.
