How to Move From AOL Mail to Gmail

Google Mail, referred to simply as Gmail, provides a full-featured, customizable email service for free. If you have been previously using an AOL Mail account, however, you may be concerned that messages in your AOL email inbox won't be transferable to your Gmail inbox. Fortunately Gmail is able to use your AOL log in information to access your AOL account and import all of your existing messages and contacts into your Gmail account.

Instructions

      Open a browser window and navigate to the Gmail sign-in page at Google.com.

      Type your Gmail address and password into their respective fields, and then click "Sign In." If you have not already created a Gmail account, click the "Create an Account" button at the bottom-right corner of the window, and then follow the instructions to create your account.

      Click the "Options" icon at the top-right corner of the window, and then click "Mail Settings."

      Click "Accounts and Import" under "Settings" at the top of the window.

      Click the "Import Mail and Contacts" button at the center of the window. This will open a new window.

      Type your AOL email address into the field at the center of the window, and then click "Continue."

      Type your AOL password into the field at the center of the window, and then click "Continue."

      Check the boxes to the left of "Import Contacts," "Import Mail," "Import New Mail for Next 30 Days," and "Add Label to All Imported Mail."

      Click the "Start Import" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use this same process to import mail from a variety of other email accounts, including Yahoo! and Hotmail.
