How to Block Water Lines on a Turbo
The turbo, or turbocharger, is a turbine-operated compressor that is operated by a vehicle's exhaust system. The turbo compressor is kept cool by the coolant that is flowing through the turbo coolant feed lines. Plug the cooling lines to the turbo to prevent water and antifreeze from leaking out of the lines during the turbo replacement process. The cooling lines can be blocked off by using a basic turbo water pipe block-off plug.

Park the vehicle and open the hood. Secure the hood in place and wait an hour or so for the engine and the turbo to completely cool down.

Locate the turbo near the top of the engine. The turbo is the round turbine-shaped component with oil lines and water lines coming out of it. Follow the coolant feed lines from the radiator or the engine to where the coolant lines connect to the turbo. The exact location will differ between vehicle makes and engine types. Place a drip pan under the engine in the general area of the turbo to catch any excess coolant.

Slowly loosen the coolant feed line connection at the turbo with a open-end wrench. Once the line is loose, stop loosening the coolant line connection and wrap the threads of the water pipe block-off plug with Teflon tape. Wrap the tape from left to right around the threads of the plug.

Finish loosening the line plug connection with the open-end wrench. Screw the plug into the end of the coolant line and tighten the plug with a open-end wrench. Use another open-end wrench as a backup if necessary.

Move to the other coolant line connection on the turbo and repeat the same steps as to remove the coolant line and to plug the line. Remove the drip pan out from under the vehicle and add antifreeze if necessary to top off the radiator.

Tips & Warnings
A turbo water line block-off plug can be found at most all auto parts stores.
Wait for the engine to completely cool down before working on or near the engine. Serious burns can result from working near a hot engine
