How to Buy Husk Cherries

How to Buy Husk Cherries thumbnail
Husk cherries, or ground cherries, are similar in flavor to cape gooseberries.

Husk cherries, also known as ground cherries or husk tomatoes, are a type of small yellow tomato that is similar in size -- but not in taste -- to the cherry tomato and has a papery skin or husk surrounding it when grown. This husk is peeled off before eating. Husk cherries can be chopped and used in salads, jams and other pastry recipes, as well as dipped in chocolate and eaten raw. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Find your local farmer's market. Search either in the yellow pages, online, in your local newspaper or ask your friends. Note that some farmer's markets are only active a few times a week or even less.

    • 2

Go to the fruit section of your local farmer's market (it is a fruit, unless they mistakenly put it in the vegetable section). Ask a market employee where to find husk cherries. Husk cherries are on average $5 per pint and $8 for a quart. Also, consider buying husk cherry seeds for your own personal garden.

Consider buying husk cherries through the Internet. It may be easier to buy seeds through the Internet than fully grown husk cherries, as the Internet vendor may not be able to guarantee freshness.
