How to Get Rid of the Musty Smell in a Down Jacket

Get the musty smell out of a down jacket by using baking soda.

Down jackets are typically packed away during warm summer months, often accumulating a musty odor during storage. To keep the jacket smelling fresh and feeling clean, it is important that you safely remove the odor. Avoid chemically based cleaning sprays that mask odor, and instead use an odor eliminator that pulls the musty smell out of the jacket.

Things You'll Need

• Baking soda
• Trash bag
• Spray bottle
• White vinegar

Instructions

1. Place the jacket inside a large garbage bag.

2. Sprinkle a generous coating of baking soda over the jacket, and tie the bag closed. Let the jacket sit in the coat overnight, and the baking soda will naturally absorb the odor.

3. Shake the coat off outdoors the next day, to get rid of the baking soda.

4. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar and mist it over the jacket to further deodorize it, if needed.
