How to Make a Fresh Floral Flower Girl Basket

Flower girls typically toss flower petals from a basket during the wedding ceremony procession.

The primary job of the flower girl in a wedding is traditionally to lead the way for the bride's procession down the aisle. The flower girl prepares the way for the bride by tossing flower petals from a basket along the aisle as she walks. To enhance the look of the basket and play into the traditional role of the flower girl, adorn the basket itself with fresh flowers.

• Long stemmed flowers
• Woven basket

Instructions

1. Keep the flowers in water until as close to the ceremony time as possible. This will keep them looking fresh throughout the ceremony and the pictures to follow.

2. Arrange the flowers to use in the flower girl's basket. All the flowers you use should have a long, pliable stem, suitable for weaving.

3. Pull the stem of the first flower through the first gap in the weave at the top of the basket so the bloom is on the outside of the basket and the stem is inside.

4. Weave the stem in and out of basket weaving below the head of the bloom to secure into the basket.

5. Insert another flower next to the first flower. Weave the stem through. Repeat until the top border of the basket is lined with fresh flowers. Cover the entire outside of the basket, if you desire.

Tips & Warnings

• Choose a basket for the flower girl that is woven. That will make it easier to weave through flower stems to adorn the basket.

• A simple, white daisy is an appropriate flower choice that reflects the simplicity and innocent of youth.

• If you are concerned about the longevity of the flowers, for example, if the weather is very hot and you are worried about the flowers wilting prematurely, there are steps you can take to prevent this. In this scenario, stop weaving the flowers through the basket when you have approximately two inches of loose stem left, pulled through to the inside of the basket. Attach a floral tube of water to each stem. Since the stems are pulled inside the basket, the tubes will be shielded from sight from all onlookers at the wedding.
