Pick fluffy yarn for your scarf that is soft to the touch and won't scratch the skin.

Even if you don't have knitting needles you can create a simple scarf by weaving yarn through your fingers. It's possible because the finger knitting techniques turns your fingers into a mini knitting machine. It takes practice to create a tight garment that intertwines evenly, but getting started is easy. The process is so simple even children can do it with the proper guidance. With your help, kids can finger-knit scarfs as well as belts and other clothing accessories for themselves or their friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your hand and the yarn. Open your left hand and hold it palm up toward your face. Spread your fingers wide so you have enough space to work with. Anchor the yarn on the thumb of your left hand. Create a slip knot and place your thumb through the loop. Position the yarn so the tail or loose short end is facing outside to the left. The working length of yarn should angle right toward your fingers.

    • 2

Weave or zigzag the yarn through your fingers. Use your right hand to place the yarn over your left hand's pointer finger, under your middle finger, over your ring finger and around your little finger. When done weave back through your fingers this time working to the left back toward your pointer finger. Do not weave around your thumb. When you are finished, each finger should be encircled.

    • 3

Begin knitting. Repeat Step 2 so you have two loops around each finger, then bring the bottom loop on each finger up over the top loop and off your digit.

    • 4

Continue knitting. Weave the yarn back through your fingers so you have two loops again, then bring the bottom loop up over the top. Repeat this step until your scarf is the desired length.

    • 5

Tie off the yarn. Take the loop on your pointer finger off the digit and place it on your middle finger. Bring the lower loop on the middle finger up and over the top loop like when you were weaving. Take the loop remaining on your middle finger and place it on your ring finger and continue the process until you get to the last stich. Cut the yarn, thread it through the last loop and pull it through to create a secure edge.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need a break, put pencils or chopsticks in the loops and set aside. When you are ready to return to your project, slip your fingers back into the appropriate slots.
