Connect a wired VoIP router to a wireless router.

Some people refer to a landline when talking about a home phone. This is because phones made prior to the digital age were actually connected to a physical outdoor line, and in many cases still are. However people also use the word landline to refer to a phone handset connected to a VoIP router, which is in turn attached to a DSL or cable modem. The reason for this reference is because a traditional phone hand set is plugged into the VoIP adapter or router, allowing a user to receive a call just as he would on a normal home phone call, even if the computer is off. However, these special routers or adapters are wired and do not allow for a wireless connection unless you attach a wireless router to the VoIP router.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect one end of an ethernet cable to the first available network port on the VoIP router. Avoid disturbing any of the telephone connection wires. Connect the other end to the first port of a wireless router.

    • 2

Connect a second ethernet cable to a second port on the back of the wireless router. Connect the other end to a network port on a computer. This wired connection is used solely for configuration purposes.

    • 3

Raise the wireless antenna to an upright position, if the router has antenna. Connect the power cord to the wireless router and to a power outlet.

    • 4

Turn on the computer and insert the wireless router installation disk in the DVD/CD device. Allow the installation wizard to start automatically. Click "Finish" when the installation completes. Verify that all the wireless router LED lights are on and that the "Internet" light is flashing green, indicating an Internet signal.

    • 5

Disconnect the ethernet cable running from the wireless modem to the computer. Keep the other cable running from the wireless router to the wired VoIP router connected at all times.

    • 6

Connect to the wireless network from the computer via the wireless icon located in the Windows task bar next to the time.
