How to Lay Out a Diamond Pattern on Concrete
There are several different surfaces on which you can successfully install a tiled pattern. For example, you can add tile to a concrete surface, such as a wall, floor or even concrete steps. If you choose to create a simple pattern with all square tiles of the same shape and size, your task will be less challenging, but the results also will be less interesting. Measure the total area where you will be creating the diamond pattern layout.

Transfer the measurements to a large piece of cardboard. Cut out the cardboard. This is where you can initially lay out the diamond pattern. If you have a very large space to cover, cut the cardboard large enough to accommodate one section of the repeating pattern.

Use the actual tiles you plan to install as you lay out your pattern on the cardboard. Start by adding any border pieces you plan to incorporate. Then, create the rest of the pattern by laying out tiles in the order you will install them. This will allow you to pick up each tile and install it the right order.

Place tile spacers between each tile to ensure that the pattern is even and attractive. The tile spacers are the same width as the joints where you will eventually add grout.

Mark any tiles that do not fit within the layout using a pencil. These tiles will need to be cut with tile cutters and by laying out your pattern, you will know exactly where to cut them before you begin the installation.

Cut any tiles you need to, and then check the fit on your cardboard layout. Once the layout is complete, you can begin installing the tiles onto the concrete surface.
