Craigslist protects the identity of posters through its anonymous email service. This service allows readers to reply to posts without having access to the poster's email address. Their reply is automatically redirected to the poster's real email address, where it can be received and responded to. Unfortunately, Craigslist does not provide an anonymous method of answering reader emails from its website, so all responses come directly from your email. It is therefore advisable to privacy-conscious users to only use a free, non-identifiable Web-based email with Craigslist. That way you are free to respond without the recipient acquiring your real email address.

Some email services allow you to modify the "From" line on your email. If you copy and paste the anonymous email address from your Craiglist post, which uses the format "sales-####-######@craigslist.org," onto the "From" field, the recipient will only have this anonymous email address and will still be able to reply to you.
